I tried to mark something (using Enchanter Mark, but as far as I know, Decorative Carvings works the same way) with "tiny" and got an error "That mark is invalid."

The reason, I discovered, was that in November, someone created a character named Tiny (and, apparently, stopped playing right after creation). Thus, the code enforcing the rule that marks cannot show possession blocked it, despite "tiny" being a perfectly valid descriptive mark.

Either such character names should be disallowed, or the marking spells/skills should be modified not to automatically block use of any word that happens to be a character name, and leave the "no possession" rule to the same discretion that the "no offensive marks" and "no deceptive marks" rules are left to: Use good judgement in your marks, and if you're caught being abusive, you'll be punished.

I think the second option is superior, because it's hard to define what names shouldn't be allowed, unless we go with "No names that are real words." Which may or may not be too restrictive.

Anything that requires manual policing causes a problem with avaiable people to police it, and complaining its unfair because of unbalanced enforcement caused by lack of people to police it.
X got caught but Y didn't!

Sortof like, it's better to let all murderers get away than to catch some?

Enchanter mark is already manually policed. The "possession" rule is the least problematic abuse, as deceptive marks and offensive marks do more to ruin game play and atmosphere. And it causes this problem of a character name being a word and then that word can't be used in marks.

I really don't see a rational justification for that "automatic policing" when the spell has to be manually policed anyway.

What is the problem with possession marks anyway?

The problem is that you're describing the physical appearance of the item. "Ganelon's spear of doom" tells us nothing of what it looks like. "A silver spear with Ganelon engraved on the hilt" would technically be ok, but names aren't allowed.

Enchanter Mark and decorative carvings (regardless of the name) only change the general description.

That is, you can have:
"short spear"
"flaming short spear"
"vibrating short spear"

The idea is for very general details. The larger details are what you see when you "look" at it.

"this is a spear about 1 meter long designed mostly to do piercing damage by thrusting it into your oppoenents eye..."

The marks/carvings from my perspective aren't designed for things as specific as "A silver spear with Ganelon engraved on the hilt".

I think that's probably why they didn't allow names to be in there.

Should allow to change long description too, or add to the long description.

Has anyone considered whether the name "Tiny" is against the rules? We wouldn't allow someone named "Huge" would we?

I could go either way on that. "Tiny" is a common enough nickname (of the bad guy variety), so could be a plausible name. Not much different from "Slim." How does one create a rule for which words can't be used as name?

If Enchanter Mark / Decorative Carvings won't be changed, though, then I guess all words should be disallowed as names.
