I just found some logs from 2003 by a balance team of players. Some of the things they voted on were terribly interesting, so I'm posting one of them now. I've avoided replaying the discussion as at least some of the players who voted on them originally still exist and play, and have paraphrased rather than repeated the original vote. If this discussion goes well I'll be putting more old votes up as topics later, so please discuss!

Armour Bypass chance
Currently there is no way to hurt an individual with impregnable armour in basic combat. There are plenty of ways to kill them still, of course, but you can't crit through their armour or really deal any damage. This system would allow some measure of armour bypass such that random "lucky" (not to be confused with the racial special) hits could ignore some or all of the armour.

Originally there were numbers given, but I think we're all aware at this point that I'm no fan of posting numbers as they're obviously subject to change through testing. Suffice to say two differing ideas were that some percentage of the armour "damage soak" would be ignored, or that the armour's "damage soak" would be commuted from a static number amount to a percentage. Either or both could wind up in play in the end. The real question is:

Should there be the chance of bypassing armour through lucky shots?

The layers of armour that could be given True Armour were reduced a lot and now weapons can be runed and enchanted (with activatable locks) far higher than before. I would say this is a moot issue now...you can definitely crit through full armour and high level combat is usually decided in a few rounds...5-6 rounds is often quite decisive.

To more directly answer the question, I would say no. Especially with weapons and combat levels as they are now, a hit that bypassed armour entirely would certainly be an immediate kill. We already have "IK" chances built into the critical hit system. And as I mentioned above, being unable to do proper damage against full armour is no longer an issue.

This isn't even remotely true anymore. Even if somebody has the best armour, AND full elemental aegis, you can crit and kill them quite fast using that exact lore on your weapon (under 10 rounds).

*echos what Minstrel says, just to drive home the point that the suggestion is a fix for a problem that no longer is even remotely relevant*

I remember when we were discussing this point on the balance council, it was mainly to change the lower level PK game. If 2 players that are 10c, are beating on each other each in TAed laen, there's no chance of hitting through it (depending on guild).

I also never thought of crits getting through, mostly just basic damage, but I do agree it's kind of a moot point now.
