I agree that tinkers shouldn't get detect magic, but I also don't like the skill compare either. So and so weapon is better......buy why is it better?

The other thing is, if you do a level thing where you get better as you age/level. Would there be a need for racial mods also. Per say elves are more magically inclined so they would get a bonus.

The idea that individual races should be better or worse than other races would probably be true on the whole, but as I understand it players are different than the masses. We have individual backgrounds that deviate from the norms of our respective races, and that should have us rise well above the racial stations we'd have been born into.

Granted, all this is only conjecture, but 20 or more levels spent in the company of magic, enchantments, and equipment done as it always is should confer to a player skills that completely overshadow in every way the difference between being born an entirely magicphobic and a magicphilic race.

As far as the compare skill is concerned, I think that with everyone able to tell the types and relative power levels of different enchantments the compare skill could become majorly specific in terms of where weapons are better or worse than each other and why. I think these points are more good support for the sort of magic recognition system we've been talking about.
